Biographical / Historical

The Columbus Botanical Garden sits on a plot of two acres on Weems Road. The land had been part of a farm/plantation belonging to the Adams and Weems families. The two families moved to this location in 1920 after being forced off their farm in Chattahoochee County by the US governments’ take over of land for the building of Ft. Benning. The land was originally bought by William A. Weems, his sister Charlotte W. Adams and her son George Monroe Adams. The Adams family would not sell the acreage until their father, George M. Adams, died in 1995. Both parents, Lillie Bell and George, didn’t want to leave their home and died there. According to court records, the Sofran Group bought 30 acres. The home has a new home two miles down the road from the Veterans Parkway /Weems Road location The new spot was part of a development deal with the Sofran Group of Atlanta. The Adams family donated the house and four outbuildings to the Historic Columbus Foundation. Philip Adams is the chairman of the Columbus Botanical Garden board of directors. Adams’ ultimate vision for the property included greenhouses, a plant conservatory, an agricultural museum, gardens accessible to people with handicaps, a great lawn with a stage for a variety of activities, an interactive children’s area, and the historic farmhouse that could include office space, classrooms and horticultural projects. Adams wanted to recreate what the area looked like when his family farmed 1100 acres.
