Biographical / Historical
The Confederate Veteran was a magazine first published by S.A. Cunningham in Nashville, Tennessee in 1893 propagating the myth of the Lost Cause of the Confederacy. Its initial creation was to raise money for the construction of a monument in honor of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States, in Richmond, Virginia.
The magazine became the “official organ first of the United Confederate Veterans and later of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Confederate Southern Memorial Society.” It had a readership of over 20,000 by 1900. In 1913, creator and editor, S.A. Cunningham, passed away and Edith D. Pope became editor. The magazine ceased publication in 1932. Other magazines of the same name still exist and are printed by the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
