Scope and Contents

This consists of a single item, the Thirty Day Menus (Series A, B, C ) and Tested Special Recipes for CCC Companies, prepared by the School for Bakers & Cooks of the Fourth Corps Area, Supplement to the Manual of Mess Management, July 1, 1939, revised July 1, 1940. Each recipe serves 100 men.

Biographical / Historical

According to the National Archives Finding Aid for the Civilian Conservation Corps, the CCC was established as an independent agency by an act of June 28, 1937 (50 Stat. 319). It succeeded the Emergency Conservation Work (1933-37). It was transferred to the Federal Security Agency by Reorganization Plan No. I, effective July 1, 1939. The purpose of the CCC was to provide employment and vocational training for unemployed youths and, to a lesser extent, for war veterans and Indians, through conservation and natural resources development work, and beginning in May 1940, defense work on military reservations and forest protection. The Corps was abolished by the Labor-Federal Security Appropriation Act (56 Stat. 569), July 2, 1942, providing for liquidation by June 30, 1943. Liquidation appropriations continued through June 30, 1948.
