The first conference was held in Westville Village in Lumpkin, Georgia, and co-sponsored with the Rural Development Center of the University System of Georgia, and was devoted to the study of the “cultural origins and heritage of the peoples of Georgia.” This first gathering was called the Westville Symposium of 1973. . Paper #1 – A Call for a New Approach, opening remarks made by Dr. Joe Mahan. Paper #2 – Evidence from Georgia Petroglyphs by Bowling C. Yates. Paper #3 –Discovery and Provenance of the Hearn Tablet by Y. Lynn Holmes. Paper #4 – Analysis of Cuneiform Inscription on Hearn Tablet. “This paper was scheduled for delivery by Dr. Ernest R. Lacheman, Sumerologist of Brandeis University. Dr. Lacheman was not present. Dr. Mahan’s comments on the paper are present, but Dr. Lacheman’s paper is not. Paper #5 – Discovery of the Metcalf Stone by Manfred D. Metcalf. Paper #6 – Not present.
