Memoirs & Genealogy of Robert Archelaus Hardaway
Scope and Contents
This is a 281 page typescript of information regarding Robert Archelaus Hardaway (b. 1829), who owned a cotton plantation in Macon, Alabama and fought in the Mexican-American War and later with Confederate Army. His 30-page memoirs describe the outlines of his life, his family, travels, his early years in Columbus, Georgia, his purchase of a cotton plantation in Macon County, Alabama (later Bullock County), his service in the Mexican-American War and action in Mexico, his return to Columbus to live in 1859, his experiences as a Confederate officer in the Civil War, and life after the war when he was a professor of Civil Engineering and Commandant of the Cadets of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of the State of Alabama , later Auburn University (1872-1881). The rest of the typescript consists of copies of mentions of R. A. Hardaway in military records of the Civil War; civil documents and newspaper accounts of him, and a detailed genealogy of the Hardaway family.
