Scope and Contents
This folder mentions Hallock’s transfer to Fort Meade in Maryland just prior to his overseas assignment; his announcement that he has safely arrived in North Africa of her first V-Mail letter in May of 1944; his arrival on June 4th in Sicily after an exhausting ride through Italy in a boxcar; his visit to Rome; asks for news of home and family; a letter from Capt. N.T. Reed to Hallock’s mother, obviously sent on by her to Richard; a subscription to Time Magazine; the chance to fire a German machine gun on the beach; his visits to Naples and Pompeii and says “Rome itself is unfortified (?) and goes shamelessly about its business as tho death and ruin were not all around it”; writes from France in September; he mentions his wounded leg in November of 1944, but has already returned to duty; mentions the third anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor; asks his mother to send flowers and a Christmas present to Jane, as well as for herself; he writes from a German kitchen in February; on March 16th 1945 he writes that he expects to be discharged from the hospital; he writes on April 16, 1945 to say that he is no longer missing in action; (where he went after his capture, wounding and escape) and mentions his reading material.
