Scope and Contents
Robert Mills Gunby was born in Georgia in 1811 and married Jane Louise Beall. He served on the board of directors for the Bank of Columbus in 1856, owned a R.M. & Company, a grocer, with Edward Croft in 1859-1860. The grocer was located at 116 Broad Street. W.H. Young, Gunby’s brother-in-law owned and operated the Eagle Factory and made Robert the president. He remained in that position until 1865 when it was destroyed by Wilson. Robert Mills Gunby died in 1885 in Columbus, Georgia and is buried in Linwood Cemetery.
Rachael Bennett was born February 26, 1793 in Screven County, Georgia. She married Edward Bennett in 1817 and they had one child whom died in childhood. Upon the death of her husband, Rachael moved to Columbus, Georgia to be with her niece, Mrs. S. A. Blackmar. She remained in this city until her death on February 19, 1885 and is buried in Linwood Cemetery. She left behind her niece and a nephew, Mr. A.R. Wright of Savannah.
The material consists of a single document of indenture where Robert M. Gunby owed Rachael Bennett $856 or a tract of land located on 6th Street within the city limits of Columbus. Document is dated January 25, 1851.
