Thomas Gilbert Map
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of a fold-out map of Columbus, Georgia, printed in 1871. Besides the street grid, using the original street names, it shows the location of various sized pipes and cisterns. It also locates prominent places such as the Pest House (hospital), located on the river next to the boat yard, the Gumby Building, the Female Academy, the Villa Reich, the Raiford House, and St. Joseph’s Academy, the African-American cemetery, among others.

Biographical / Historical
Thomas Gilbert was born on March 11, 1833 and died in Columbus, Georgia on May 24, 1905. He married Fannie Elvia Gilbert, who was born in 1839 and died in 1916. They are buried in Linwood Cemetery in Columbus. They had two sons, James J. and Thomas Gilbert, and a daughter named Fannie. Gilbert was the publisher of the Columbus Daily Sun newspaper before its absorption by the Columbus Enquirer. He was also a publisher of books and maps and a prolific job printer. His son James J. Gilbert took over the printing business and ran it until his retirement in 1937.
