Robert H. Murray (Murry) was born in Georgia in 1839. He became a private on June 11,1861. He was appointed 5th sergeant and surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia on April 9, 1865. The 9th Georgia volunteer Infantry was formed in June of 1861 and contained men from around the state of Georgia, especially from the counties of Wilkes, Chattooga, Clay, Talbot, Baldwin, Walker, Brooks, Bullock and Sumter. The regiment fought at Gettysburg, Siege of Knoxville, and participated in the Wilderness Campaign while serving under General James Longstreet. Aside from a brief stint in the Army of Tennessee, the 9th spent most of its time during the war in George “Tige” Anderson’s Brigade, Longstreet’s corps.
