Biographical / Historical
Fate Leebern was one of the crime kingpins of Phenix City, Alabama in the 1940s. He was murdered on September 16, 1946 at the Southern Manor Night Club there. John Hoyt Shepherd (1899-1980), a rival of Leebern’s for the illegal whiskey trade in Phenix City, was charged with the crime. At Hoyt’s trial in October of 1946, his brother Grady “Snooks” Shepherd confessed to the murder and Hoyt was acquitted.
