Scope and Contents

The letters are from 1819 and 1897, and are of a personal nature. Included is a newspaper clipping about a Civil War diary and an envelope that possibly contained the letters at some later point in their existence.

Biographical / Historical

Thomas Bogue Slade was born in 1800 and died in 1882. He was a Baptist minister and educator in women’s institutions and college throughout the south. The Slade family and descendants lived in El Dorado, later renamed St. Elmo, in Columbus, Georgia until 1945.
