Scope and Contents

These transcribed minutes record the appointment of men to various positions, from chain carriers for the surveyors to town councilmen. This council set rules for who paid tolls to cross the bridge to Alabama, how close to the river trees could be cut and how the sale of land to private individuals and to businesses would be conducted, among many other rules and regulations. These transcripts were created in 1940, probably as a WPA project.

Biographical / Historical

This collection details the establishment of the city of Columbus, Georgia in 1828 and its early development. General Elias Beall was appointed commissioner for the purpose of laying out a town at Coweta Falls in Muscogee County and “of disposing of the same”.
