Scope and Contents

This collection includes political materials relating to the Democratic Party activities in Georgia in the 1910s. Most of the material relates to the 1906 gbernatorial race against Clark Howell, publisher of the Atlanta Constitution, and Hoke Smith, publisher of the Atlanta Journal. Dr. McLendon found them among his father’s papers.

Biographical / Historical

Alvin L. McLendon was one of the original members of the faculty of Columbus Community College when it opened in 1959, the predecessor to Columbus College, which in turn became Columbus State University.

A sheet in the administrative file indicates that Dr. McLendon also donated a photo of O. B. Stevens (b. August 1, 1847), who served as both the Commissioner of Agriculture and on the Railroad Commission of Georgia. This may be the photo currently in folder 122, photo number 646 in the Historic Photographs collection.
