Biographical / Historical

The International Women’s Club of Fort Benning (IWC) was formed in mid-1975 to support non-US spouses of military personnel stationed at Fort Benning. Its activities included monthly meetings; support for charitable causes such as Santa’s House, Battered Women Shelter, and others; periodic holiday events; international meals; dances; and assistance with English as a Second Language classes, GED classes, citizenship classes.

Arrangement

The collection contains 3 series, including:

1. Organizational Materials This series includes copies of the Army rules and regulations concerning Private Organizations, of which the International Wife’s Club was one. These cover the creation of the club, its initial certification and occasional recertifications, as well as the club’s constitution and bylaws, and their revisions. Scattered membership lists are also included here. 2. Club President’s Records These include calendars, monthly planners, notes, planning materials, address books, calling cards, and other materials used in carrying out her club duties. 3. Member Meetings The Club met monthly. They published a newsletter, The Bulletin, which varied in frequency. At different times it was monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly. The grouping of the monthly meetings followed the newsletter. It was also occasionally called The Grapevine.
