Minnie Jewett Scrapbook
Scope and Contents
This small collection consists of one scrapbook assembled by Minnie Jewett in about 1886. The scrapbook was presented to her by her friend F. Haddock, March 19, 1886 of Hatchechubbee, Alabama. Her cuttings include newspaper clippings, poetry, and flowers. Her wedding announcements are in the scrapbook. Every other page has cutouts from magazines or cards. An interesting page shows the cornerstone of the confederate monument in Montgomery on April 28, 1886. This scrapbook is housed in the oversized box of the SMC collections.

Biographical / Historical
Mary Anderson “Minnie”Jewett, was born 29 September 1865 in Macon, Georgia to the Rev. Charles Jewett and Martha Clements. She graduated from Columbus Female College. A marriage announcement from the Enquirer Sun tells of the marriage of Marcus Ellis O’Neal of Hatchechubbee and Minnie Jewett of White Sulpher Springs in Meriwether County on 21 July 1886. Marcus died in 1894. The 1900 census shows her as a widow with three children, Dozier, Susie, and Minnie. Minie remarried in 1905 to Herschell Hargett. 1910 shows the family in Columbus on 1411 19th St. Herschell is a lawyer. 1920 shows that Minnie is again a widow and a cake maker in a tea room. Her two daughters are teachers. By 1930, Minnie is living with her married daughter Minnie and Robert Tondee. On 23 Jan 1934 Minnie dies at her daughters residence, 1417 19th St. She was a member of East Highlands Methodist Church. Her obituary stated that she was a teacher for 20 years in Muscogee County.
