Scope and Contents

The collection includes materials relating to the dedication of Daniel Elementary School in November of 1959, as well as photographs of R. B. Daniel and his family, and correspondence with George Foster Peabody, General George C. Marshall and George Washington Carver. The photographs are housed in the Photograph Cabinet. (See note below.)

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Roland Bird Daniel was born December 7, 1866 at Taylor's Creek in Liberty County, Georgia, one of the 10 children of Abram Bird Daniel and Sarah Shepard Daniel. He died in Columbus, Georgia on October 30, 1955. He received his A.B. Degree from Emory in 1891 and his LL.D. from the University of Georgia in 1929. He was elected superintendent of Columbus Public Schools in 1909 and served until 1937. In addition to his activities in school administration, he was active in the Rotary Club and he was a partner in the development of the Morningside Subdivision, north of Columbus. He also published a bulletin on vocational education, served as Chairman of the Food Rationing Board during World War II, and was an active member of St. Paul's Methodist Church. R.B. Daniel was also the chairman of the Committee on Education for the development of Columbus College (now Columbus State University). Daniel Elementary School on Manchester Expressway was named for him in November of 1959. It later became Daniel Junior High School. The building was demolished in 2014.

Processor's note: Photographs from the Roland B. Daniel collection are now housed in MC 49 folder 2 (2 photographs) drawer 4 of the Photograph Cabinet. Folder 1 is in drawer 3 (2 oversized photographs). These photographs include studio portraits done by the Brinson Studio in Columbus, Georgia and by Annie M. Graf of New York City. There is also a photo of the unveiling of his portrait for the school dedication in 1959.
