Biographical / Historical

The Elizabeth Canty Home Project is in the Cusseta Road neighborhood, which consists of 32 acres of land between Cusseta Road and Weracoba Creek. The project developed after the passing of Housing Act of 1949 and was to house people of color. A second phase of the project took place in the early 1950s.

The housing project was named for Elizabeth Canty who was born in Fort Mitchell, Alabama in 1858. The family later moves to Columbus, Georgia where Elizabeth attended public schools. She was one of the first African Americans to graduate from the Tuskegee Institute. As an adult, Elizabeth Canty worked as a teacher in the Muscogee County public school system for 52 years at the 28th Street School, 6th Avenue School, and William H. Spencer High School. She died in Columbus in 1948 at the age 72.

The report was completed in April 2021 as mitigation for demolition of the project.
