This organization was established in order to coordinate all activities taking place in the area of Columbus, Georgia relating to the observances surrounding the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Each year in Columbus there are parades, religious services, theatrical performances, and other events. The group was variously known as The MLK Steering Committee, The Dr. Martin Luther King Week Steering Committee, the Martin Luther King Unity Week Steering Committee and other variants.
