The General Oral History Collection was established in 1975 when the Columbus College Archives/Chattahoochee Valley Historical Collections was taken over by the History Department of Columbus State University. The original collection included several hundred oral histories. Its founders, John S. Lupold and Richard Hanks, incorporated oral histories into their local history and historical methods classes. Craig Lloyd, former Director of the archives, also contributed several oral histories concerning various local history topics. Over time oral histories conducted by students of Virginia Causey in her Oral History classes have also been added. Other interviews have been donated by individuals or as part of smaller projects.
