Biographical / Historical
In April of 1931, a group of 6 young Columbus women met at the home of Frances Cozart with the idea of forming an organization dedicated to community service. This would grow into the Junior league from its beginnings as the Community Service League.
These women were Mrs. William Battle, Mrs. Hatcher Boykin, Mrs. Tracy Davis, Mrs. Calvin DesPortes, Mrs. Neil Bickerstaff (Sara Bussey), and Mrs. William I Hudson Jr (Frances Cozart). Mrs. Hatcher had been a member of the Atlanta League and came home eager to start a group in Columbus. The group spent most of 1931 getting the organization going and writing a constitution and bylaws. The first meeting was held in August of 1931 at the Country Club. There were over 60 members by the end of this year.
Their stated purpose is to be” an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable”.
The Junior League has had a range of community service projects ranging from art shows, to welfare work, to producing a children’s theater, sponsoring symphony concerts, the Listening Eyes School for the Deaf. Fund raising events include their Follies, held every four years, their Attic Sales and cookbook sales.
