Content Description
Fort Benning: Images of America (2003) was authored by Kenneth H. Thomas Jr., a Columbus, Georgia native. The book was published by Arcadia Publishing Co. The author had the idea for the book as the 85th anniversary of Ft. Benning’s 1918 founding was approaching in 2003. At that point in time, no one from Ft. Benning approached him to do a book and he had no connections to the post. The Georgia Archives was about to move locations, so if photos were to be acquired, it had to be done quickly. Many of these purchased photos from the Archives are in the final publication. The National Infantry Museum photos were also scanned and used.
In 2018 the publisher wanted to do a centennial edition since the 100th anniversary of Ft. Benning was approaching. A new introduction was added and the Centennial edition came out in 2018.
Fort Benning was established outside Columbus, Georgia in October 1918 by the United States Army, having moved from Fort Sill, Oklahoma, to a better area and named Camp Benning, after the Confederate General, Henry L. Benning. The base moved to its present location, 9 miles south, in June 1922. The new location was created as the Infantry School of Arms, becoming the training post for many of the nations’ future leaders. The current location encompasses over 180,00 acres. In 2023, Fort Benning was renamed Fort Moore in honor of Lietutenant General Hal Moore and his wife Julie Compton Moore. On March 3, 2025, Defense Secretary ordered the U.S. Army to rename the base back to Fort Benning, this time honoring Corporal Fred G. Benning who earned a distinguished cross in World War I.
