Content Description

This small collection of one Hollinger box contains the photos of the house at 1410 Stark Ave in Columbus, Georgia, deeds, remodeling contracts, and landscaping plans. The house was occupied the longest by the Browne family, Rhodes and Nina and their children, from 1917 to 1987. Rhodes Browne was once a Mayor of Columbus. Some of these materials had been housed in MC 201. When new materials were added in 2022 in a sealed collection, it was decided to make a new separate collection to be more accessible.

Biographical / Historical

This historic and beautiful home dating from the 1830s, was the home of many families through the years in the Wildwood Circle Historic District in Columbus, Georgia. Because the name of the street has been spelled Starke or Stark, the processor has chosen to use Stark Avenue. The house was constructed at around 1838 and changed hands many times over the years, lots 17-22 The Browne family owned the property from December 1913 to 1987. Nina Browne had the house renovated in 1926-1927 by T. Firth Lockwood, a prominent Columbus architect. Among the recorded warranty deeds found in a 1917 document of Nina Y. Browne’s are William H. Chambers to Elvira Flewellen, 1854; Abner Flewellen to Hugh B. Dawson 1861; Hugh B. Dawson to William A. Bedell and wife Sarah, 1862; Thomas H. Dawson, executor of Hugh, to William A. Bedell, 1867; William A. Bedell to John M. Starke, 1867; John Starke to wife Mary at his death, 1877. Starkes owned it to 1884. 1885 H.H. Epping passed it to Mary R. Flourney, then in 1889 she sold it to Muscogee Real Estate company.

Custodial History

All these materials have been given to the Archives at various times by Sandra Strothers Hudson, great granddaughter of Rhodes Browne. Some of the materials had been housed in MC 201. When new materials were added, it was decided to make a separate collection.
