Schnell Family Papers
Scope and Contents
The Schell Papers Collection consists of nineteen boxes and reflects Frank and Gail Schnell’s impact on the field of archaeology and local history. The collection includes their personal research interests, notes, and professional writings throughout their lives. This collection also features a continuation of the MC 25 collection of their family histories including named photos and correspondence. The collection features data, written history, measured drawings, photos, photo negatives, slides, physical items, academic journals, and personal writings.

Biographical / Historical
Frank and Gail Schnell had a lifelong dedication to the field of archaeology and specially the local history of Columbus and Muscogee County. Frank Schnell researched the Southeast United States, writing frequently on the Chattahoochee Valley. Frank taught at Columbus State University and worked at the Columbus Museum as an archaeologist. Gail (Schroeder) Schnell was passionate about indigenous pottery analysis in both its cultural significance and pattern use between different cultures. Both Frank and Gail Schnell were active in the Georgia Archaeology Society.
