Biographical / Historical

This prominent Columbus family was headed by Isaac Joseph (b. Aug.1833 in Germany) and his wife, Louise Wohlborn Joseph (whose birth dates are given variously as 1837 or 1842 and her place of birth as either Germany or New York). Isaac Joseph emigrated from Germany in 1842. Their children include Dan Joseph (January 21, 1858-1930); Charles J. Joseph (November 6, 1859-March 12, 1924); Hart Joseph; Ida Joseph (b. May, 1865); E. Jonathan (John) Joseph (b. July 1875); Nell Joseph (b. Nov. 1879); Mrs. Walter Bicheat Cheatham, nee Eva Castleman Joseph (b. July, 1875); Mrs. W. J. Wood; Louise Joseph (b. Oct. 1876); Allie Joseph (b. Sept, 1880) and Gertrude Joseph (b. May 1887). According to the Roosevelt Rehab history of the Cottages at Warm Springs,Georgia, Isaac was the owner of the Joseph Cottage. It also says that he was the president of a successful steamship line, The Columbus and Gulf Navigation Company, among other business interests. One of the company's steamships was the “Fannie Fearn”, a stern-wheel steamboat, purchased in May, 1887. (Fannie was the name of one of Isaac Joseph's daughters). Boats ran from Columbus, Georgia to Apalachicola, Florida. The “Fannie Fearn” sank in the Chattahoochee River near Columbus in 1902.
