Content Description

This collection consists of over 1,000 original photographs and negatives produced by the The Ledger-Enquirer newspaper in Columbus. Many of the photographs contain the crop and proportion marks from the editor and the original identification on the back. They are grouped together mostly by subject with Phenix City Cleanup and the Stocking Strangler cases having their own boxes.

Biographical / Historical

According to his biography page of the Ledger-Enquirer, Tim Chitwood is from Seale, Alabama, and started as police beat reporter with the Ledger-Enquirer in 1982. He has since covered Columbus’ serial killings and other homicides, following some from the scene of the crime to trial verdicts and ensuing appeals. He also has been a Ledger-Enquirer humor columnist since 1987. He’s a graduate of Auburn University, and started out working for the weekly Phenix Citizen in Phenix City, Ala.
