George Stanton began his career at Columbus State University in 1969 as a professor of biology and ecology. He served as Chair of the Biology Department beginning around 1982 and Interim Dean of College of Science in 2003-2004. He was appointed to the Muscogee County School Board in 1982 and served ten years. In 1976 he was named Outstanding Young Man by the Jaycees. He established Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center and is a big proponent for environmental conservation throughout the region. Dr. Stanton retired in 2009 as Vice-President of Academic Affairs. Dr. Stanton is a native of Muncie, Pennsylvania, graduated from Bucknell University and received his doctorate from the University of Maine.
