Biographical / Historical

St. Francis Hospital opened for service in 1950. In March 1958, Sister M. Laurentine, Administrator of the hospital, wanted to add another dimension of services and asked Mrs. Arthur Berry and Mrs. T.C. Hudson, who had cochaired the initial drive for the hospital, to be responsible for assembling a group of women to form an auxiliary. Sister M. Evelyn was appointed mentor to the group.

After an organizational tea on April 15, 1958 with over 150 invitees, the first meeting was held on May 28, 1958 with Mrs. Berry presiding. A constitution and bylaws were read at this first meeting. The auxiliary began to function on July 1, 1958. The Mardi Gras Ball was instituted in 1959 to help raise funds for the student nurse scholarships. In 1966, the Auxiliary assumed financial responsibility of the new Intensive Care Unit. In 1973, a Gift Shop was established, another fundraiser for the auxiliary. The first male volunteer came aboard in 1982. In over 56 years, the volunteers have contributed over 1,019,159 hours of service.
