The story starts with the birth of Alfred Owen Blackmar on July 14, 1830 in Savannah, Georgia. He died just before reaching his 100th birthday in 1930. The family moved to Columbus in 1835 when Alfred was 5 years old. Starting in 1881 he was connected with the London Lancashire Insurance Company. He married Mary Ann Blood of Worcester, Massachusetts in 1851. Her parents were Dexter and Mary Gordon Dana Blood. Mary Ann and Alfred shared a 5th great grandfather, James Blackmar. Alfred and Mary Ann celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in 1926. The couple had five children; John, Savannah, Mary, Dana and Betsey. Most of the family is buried in the Blackmar plot in Linwood Cemetery in Columbus.
