Biographical / Historical

The group of 13 people known as the “Friends of the Library” met Nov. 10, 1975 at the home of Mrs. W.D. Akers in order to organize a new organization to be called The Original Muscogee County Genealogical Society. This name was meant to include all of the old Muscogee County. C. Dexter Jordan was appointed acting President after which he selected temporary officers. A charter and constitution were drafted. Standing committees were formed and their chairmen were appointed at subsequent meetings.

The first regular meeting of the society was held Feb. 28, 1976 in the conference room of the Bradley Memorial Library. Sixty-seven members attended. The name was changed to the Genealogical Society of the Original Muscogee County, often referred to as GSOMC. An endowment fund was started in 1976 by C. Dexter Jordan as part of the society. The society received its Articles of Incorporation from the Secretary of State’s office of Georgia July 9, 1976.

The purpose of the society was to raise the standards of genealogical research through educational programs, workshops, the publication of genealogical data and to promote the collection and preservation of the records. Membership was by invitation only and approval of the Membership Committee. In 1983 membership became open to everybody. The Society sponsors a number of special events each year, including all day workshops and speakers.

The journal of the MGS, Muscogiana, is published twice a year and includes articles of local interest and genealogical data. A website is also maintained.
