Scope and Contents

These materials include Britto’s teaching materials, her plays and drafts, records of her work with the Columbus Arts Council, speeches and presentations and other documents relating to her work with the arts in Columbus. They are arranged in the following series:

Biographical / Historical

Pauline Elizabeth “Betty” Brower (Mrs. George R. Britto) was born on May 7th 1924, the daughter of Peter J. and Pauline C Brower, in Walden, New York. She died on May 20th, 2017. She graduated from high school at the age of 14 and later in life she received a degree from College. She studied acting at Greet Academy in Washington, D.C. and privately. She was an actor, playwright, acting coach, lecturer, jewelry designer, and administrator. She is buried with her husband, Lt. Col. George R. Britto, at the Fort Benning Main Post Cemetery.

She served on the Theatre Advisory Panel, Georgia Council for the Arts, 1980-1982; president of the Columbus Arts Council (CAC) 1979-1981, president of the Sprinter Theatre, 1975-1976; Springer Board member 1965-1979; Springer Opera House Arts Association Board, 1976-1979, 1983-1989; Georgia Theatre Conference Treasurer, 1973-1974; Member of the Dramatists Guild, of New York, from 1988, member of the Georgia Citizens for the Arts, the Columbus Museum and the Columbus Artists’ Guild. She was also the managing director of and teacher at the Springer Opera House School of Theatre Arts (now known as the Spring Academy) from 1979 until she retired from the Springer in 1989. She directed acted in productions at the Springer Opera House and the Fort Benning Theatre as well as at various colleges and on stages in New York and Atlanta. and was a life-long advocate of the arts.
