Biographical / Historical
Terrell Wingfield Hill, Sr. (March 22, 1897-February 19, 1941) was a clerk with the Hardaway Construction Company before he enlisted. He served with the U.S. Army during WWI. According in the Ledger account of his award of the Distinguished Service Cross by General W. H. Cordon “Terrill [sic] W. Hill enlisted at Camp Gordon, Ga., on January 5, 1918 and attended the Third Officers Training school at that camp from January 5 to April 19, 1918. He served with Company “F”, 326th Infantry; Company “K”, 312th Infantry. He was promoted to grade of corporal May 1, 1918 and to Sergeant June 15, 1918 and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant of infantry July 18 of the same year. He participated in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives overseas and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross . . .” He was wounded in battle on October 23, 1918. After the war he returned to Columbus where he was a realtor. He is buried in Linwood Cemetery.
