Biographical / Historical

Fort Gilmer and the other confederate breastworks from the Civil War’s “Last Battle of the Civil War” were wearing away from dirt bike users. A group in Phenix City, Alabama, working with the Historical Commission, tried to save the sites. The site was owned by the city school board. The other forts that could be restored include the “Backyard Fort”, the fort at Pine Grove Cemetery and a fort behind Sands Motel. There are also battery positions near the county courthouse. Fort Gilmer, named after Gen. Jeremy Gilmer, oversaw the fort’s defenses, was never in the battle. It had plenty of guns, but no men, and the Union troops went around it.
