Scope and Contents

This collection was originally collected by Walter King Hatcher and consists of a photograph album of Chero-Cola plant in Birmingham, Alabama, its operations, plant, and growth as a company. Photographs were taken in the mid 1910-1930s.

Biographical / Historical

Walter King Hatcher was born July 16, 1890 in Dawson, Georgia to Lucius Adkins Hatcher and Eleanor Moore King. He is the younger brother of Claud A. Hatcher, founder of Chero-Cola and Royal Crown Cola Company. Walter worked twelve years as a salesman at his father’s wholesale grocery company before moving to Birmingham, Alabama to run the Chero-Cola plant located at Sixth Avenue South. Hatcher married Annette Leonard on September 23, 1913 and had two children, Antoinette Leonard Hatcher and William King Hatcher. Walter King Hatcher was a member of several community organizations in Alabama including the Southern Club, Chamber of Commerce, United Commercial Travelers, Southside Baptist Church, and the Alabama Fisherman and Hunters Association. His favorite place to fish was Florida where he tried to Jacksonville with his family. He died there on July 6, 1966.
