Scope and Contents

This collection includes correspondence files relating to Columbus textile mill management and civic activities, photographs, calendars, citations and award memorabilia, clippings from trade journals and newspapers and Georgia Institute of Technology alumni lists. In addition there is a small desk from the Eagle and Phenix Mills from about 1878 that is on display in the Archives Reference Room.

Biographical / Historical

James A. Byars graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1931 and had a career in textile plant management, focusing on increasing efficiency. Among his positions he worked at Plant # 6 of the Russell Manufacturing Company in Alexander City, Alabama (1945-1946), followed by Avondale in Pell City, Alabama. He later worked at the Eagle and Phenix Mills in Columbus, Georgia.
