Harry Cook Jackson was born in on July 23, 1915 and died on February 12, 2000. He was the son of Stonewall Jackson and Emmie Elizabeth Herndon. His step mother was Willie Bowden. He graduated from Columbus High School, followed by the Georgia Military College on a football scholarship. In 1936 he transferred to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University). He graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He joined Morton Machine Works, Inc., which had been founded by his grandfather. Jackson enlisted in the Army in 1941and served in both the Army and the Air Force during World War II, seeing action in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel in in the U.S. Air Force Reserve when he returned to inactive duty in 1946. After the war, Jackson returned to Morton Machine Works, a company co-founded by his father, and helped build the company into an international manufacturer of dyeing, drying, finishing and hydraulic equipment for the textile industry. At the same time, he attended law school at night and was admitted to the Bar of the state of Georgia and Federal courts in 1952. Jackson was both a Columbus, GA businessman and politician, active in business and civic activities. Jackson ran the Morton Machine Works. Jackson’s son-in-law, Bill Burgan, later worked with Harry Jackson in the business. Jackson was elected to the Georgia Senate in 1961 and served from 1964 through 1974. He ran for Governor of Georgia in 1974, but was defeated by George Bisbee. He was elected mayor of Columbus in the 1978 election, serving from January 1979 to January 1983. After leaving office, he was named to the Georgia Ports Authority in 1985 and served until 1997. Jackson married Helen Lovein (1919-2013) on October 5, 1941. She was the daughter of Norman and Eunice Lovein. They had 2 children. Helen Lovein Jackson was born in 1946. She married Charles William “Bill” Burgin (1940-2016). Harry and Helen’s second child was born on December 27, 1950. He was named Stonewall Jackson, after his grandfather, but known as “Harry Jack”. Born with special needs, his condition inspired his parents’ support for missions focused on assisting adults with intellectual and development disabilities. Their activities culminated in the Wesley Glen ministry under the auspices of the Southwest Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church.
