Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The introduction to the report contains the following information: The Housing Authority of Columbus, Georgia (HACG) plans to remove all of the buildings in the Louis T. Chase Homes complex located along 1st and 2nd Avenues where the streets are intersected by 20 and 21st street. The Chattahoochee Riverwalk and the Chattahoochee River run along the western side of the complex. Southern Research Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. of Pine Mountain, Georgia contracted with HACG in May 2020 to prepare a Historic Narrative and a Photographic Archive Record of the Chase Homes as mitigation for the loss of the historic homes due to the planned demolition of all standing structures. Chase Homes were completed in 1952 and have stood on the banks of Chattahoochee River near downtown Columbus for nearly70 years. There are 17 apartment buildings, 16 two-story and one single-story, in the complex. There is also an administrative office/community building built in 1972 and a 2012 vehicle storage building located with the complex. The report contains a detailed history of the complex, complete with architectural drawings and a comprehensive photographic survey of the buildings. A digital copy of the report on a CD-ROM is also included.
