Sarah Lowe MacDuffie (1925-2015) married Benjamin Hurt Hardaway III in 1945. Her obituary as posted on the website of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary gives a thorough review of her life. It reads, in part: “Mrs. Hardaway was born February 26, 1925 in Columbus, Ga., the daughter of Dr. James H. and Lucile Peacock McDuffie. She was an active member of the arts and education community in Columbus, serving on the board of directors for the Columbus Museum and the Springer Opera House, Trinity and Brookstone schools, and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery. She also served on the board of the Junior League of Columbus. She was instrumental in establishing the Midland Pony Club. She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church, the Columbus Town Committee of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in Georgia and was Historic Columbus Foundation’s Honored Lady in 1997. Mrs. Hardaway grew up in the Overlook neighborhood and attended Wynnton and Columbus High Schools as well as Sweet Brier College in Virginia. She enjoyed shooting, horseback riding, gardening, entertaining and collecting American art. Survivors include her husband of 69 years Benjamin Hurt Hardaway III; her daughters Page Hardaway Flournoy, Mary Lu Hardaway Lampton, Susannah Hardaway, and Ann Hardaway Taylor; her sister Mary McDuffie Redmond, seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Columbus Museum, the Springer Opera House or Columbus Hospice.” This series documents her life from her college days at Sweetbriar until her death. After her marriage in 1945 she assumed responsibility for the social side of their joint lives, planning parties, dinners, and preparations for parties given for the annual Mardi Gras ball, the annual Heritage Ball of the Historic Columbus Foundation, Christmas, Thanksgiving, birthdays, hunt breakfasts, etc. She was also in charge of the Hardaway household arrangements, including staff and their schedules and duties, furnishings, decoration, repairs, etc. She also managed most of their charitable contributions to the groups mentioned above, as well as the Columbus State University Foundation, among others. Ben took care of contribuions to areas of his interests, such as the Infantry Museum, and several hunting related organizations. Sarah also managed the annual lists of Christmas gifts given and received. Most of the thank-you notes written for gifts received for Christmas, as well as for anniversaries, birthdays, hospitality extend and received, etc. were written by her. Photocopies of her outgoing correspondence were made and kept. Also present is extensive correspondence relating to landmark events such as their 50th wedding anniversary (and her gift to him) and their 80th birthdays. She was an enthusiastic participant in the family outdoor activities such as fox hunting, etc. As she aged, she began to experience health issues. These are documented in her records as well.
