These records were created to conform to the Georgia Archaeological Site File project maintained by the University of Georgia, according to a policy statement promulgated by the Archaeology Task Force in January of 1985. Besides the 17 boxes of files there is 1 drawer of oversized material, primarily maps, often annotated.

Arrangement is by state (Georgia, Mix of Georgia and Alabama, and Alabama). Folders are arranged alphabetically by name of county, and marked with a 3-digit alphanumeric code, presumably assigned by the site file personnel, as outlined in the policy statement of 1985. Files relating to Bartow County, Georgia, for example, would be labeled Bartow County 9Br. When there was more than one documented site per county, each site was indicated by adding a number to the code, such as Bartow County 9Br-1, 9Be-2, etc. Some folders were opened without a code but with the name of a site, and filed under the county where the site is located. It is possible that they never received their official site number by the state task force.

Information in these files was created by a variety of sources. These include the Georgia Historical Commission, the University of Georgia, The Columbus Museum of Arts and Crafts, and contract archaeologists. Folders may contain site information forms, as well as photographs, maps and hand-written notes. Some documents contain site numbers that do not coincide with the 3 digit code assigned by the Georgia Archaeology Task Force.

Be aware that these sites contain information regarding indigenous people that lived in a particular area or site. Some photographs contain images of human remains.
