Scope and Contents
Due to the size of this collection, a temporary finding aid can be found here
This spreadsheet inventory is searchable using "Control F" function. Since this collection is arranged broadly, you may need to use multiple search terms to capture what you are interested in. For example: a high school sports event could be found under the school's name or "Sports" or under a coachs name.
This collection consists of approximately 76,000 black-and-white photographic prints that date from the early 1900s through 2002. As a collection of newspaper photographs, the images depict a wide variety of subjects, which include individuals, groups and clubs, buildings, businesses, and events. While Ledger-Enquirer photographers took a majority of the images, there are a small amount of Associated Press Wire Photographs that depict subjects from the Columbus-area. Most of the images have descriptions on the verso, which provides identifiable information such as names, titles, and dates about the subject of the photograph. Of particular interest are the photographs from the Phenix City, Alabama, corruption scandal in 1954, for which the Ledger-Enquirer won a Pulitzer Prize in Public Service for its coverage in 1955. Other photographs of interest document the changing urban landscape of Columbus, Georgia, as well as prominent events hosted annually in the city.
