The note reads, in its entirety, "Dear Cathy, I have just come across this piece by Roberta (Topie) Johnson Steiner, Carson's first cousin, who introduced me to Edwin by mail. She had been the roommate of a good friend of mine at college and editor of her college magazine. Sorry I won't be at the Conference, but my travelling days are over.
