According to Callie B. McGinnis' article in volume 4 of Muscogiana (1993) and also on the website Rootsweb on Ancestry.com, the Hatcher & McGehee Negro Book was part of the Chattahoochee Valley Historical Collections in the Columbus State University Archives. It was donated to the Archives by Mrs. Lenora Woodall Nilan. The book is a record of the purchase and sale of slaves from 1858 to 1860 by Hatcher & McGehee, one of three slave trading companies that operated in Columbus, Georgia. The company was run by Samuel J Hatcher, a native of Virginia, and Allen Clements McGehee, a native of Jones County, Georgia. According to the 1860 Columbus City Directory, the other two "slave depots" were Harrison & Pitts and S. Ogletree. The transcript of the book can be found on the Rootsweb site above. The Muscogiana article also mentions a student paper title, The Development of the Slavery and Slave Trade in Columbus, Georgia, by Columbus College student Stephen Boling in 1979. In it Boling provides an overview of the local slave trade, and describes some of the undertakings of the Hatcher and McGehee Company. It is filed in the Columbus College Collection, Student Papers Series, Box 24, Folder 7.
